Synopsis

The centrepiece of this colourful collection is THE BLACK GIRL IN SEARCH OF GOD, a tale in the manner of Voltaire's "CANDIDE" showing the stages of development of God, from the monster bogeyman to the Prince of Peace. In her search the Black Girl encounters a series of gentlemen, generally clothed in long white nightshirts. When she is tired of arguing and of laying about with her knobkerrie, she settles down with a red-haired Irish socialist, following Voltaire's advice that the wisest attitude to life is to cultivate one's own garden. The lesser tales range from a satirical fairy story to an obituary of an old revolutionary hero; from an essay in dramatic form on the theatre to an exposition of Don Giovanni's character.
