This is an account of Mohammad's life and is also the study of the impact of an ideology upon a society. Seventh century Arabia, although fragmented and in many respects primitive, was moving towards a settled economy. The ideology of Islam - calling for submission to the will of God - moulded this nation into unity and into a conquering force which, within a hundred years of Mohammad's death, subdued an area stretching from the Pyrenees to the borders of China.

This volume provides an introduction to the life and message of the Prophet Muhammad, as well as a study of the effects of Islam - a religion that succeeded in yoking the most antagonistic tribes and peoples together under a common purpose, transforming Arabia from a nomadic to a settled society. This edition is published with a new prologue by the author, a scholar of Islamic history and society.
Maxime Rodinson is one of the world's most eminent scholars of Islamic history and society, and was for many years Professor at the Ecole Pratique des Hautes Etudes at the Sorbonne. Rodinson's books include Europe and the Mystique of Islam (I.B.Tauris). Muhammad, his most famous work, remains the classic account of the Prophet and of the birth of Islam.
