This is a fascinating study of the lifestyle of the Japanese elite of the Heian period (fl. c. A.D. 950-1050), when the rest of the world, apart from China, lay in cultural darkness. Looking at one of the most engaging periods of world history, where the awareness of beauty and the aesthetic were incredibly acute, Dr Morris outlines the political and social life of the period, as well as the superstitions and rules of conduct between men and women that prevailed.
