During his life Jesus did not view himself as divine, nor did his disciples. In THE CHANGING FACES OF JESUS the great scholar Vermes works back through successively earlier accounts of the life of Christ to finally reveal the true, historical figureof Jesus hidden beneath the Gospels: a Palestinian charismatic convinced he had an essential role to play in bringing about the kingdom of God.

Paperback. Etat : Used. In a world where selfies reign supreme and every celebrity is but a filter away from divinity, Geza Vermes takes us on an astonishingly labyrinthine journey into the realm of Jesus ? the man, the myth, the many faces. Yes, you read that right. ?The Changing Faces of Jesus? is not just a book; it?s a veritable kaleidoscope of Christological interpretations, and frankly, it?s enough to make your head spin faster than a spinning top at a toddler?s birthday party where the cake mysteriously vanished. Published in the bombastic year of 2001, this tome by Vermes, who may or may not have had a side gig as an art curator, challenges our perceptions of the ultimate Easter Bunny ? sorry, we meant saviour. The author artfully weaves through the gory details of how Jesus has been portrayed across various cultures and epochs. From the somber and austere, yet undeniably dapper, representations of the Renaissance to the modern interpretations that could easily double as a cover for a rock band?s new album, each face is as multifaceted as a diamond caught in a very peculiar light. But this isn?t mere art critique; oh no! Vermes dives head-first into historical contexts, societal nuances, and the ever-present question of who really gets to decide what Jesus looks like. Spoiler alert: it?s not just the Sunday school teachers. We?re talking about an epic face-off between theological interpretations, cultural appropriations, and, let?s be honest, a bit of good old-fashioned wishful thinking. As you navigate through this book, you?ll find yourself musing over several substantial and perhaps somewhat daunting questions: Where does the notion of Jesus the hippie fit in with Jesus the stern moral teacher? What happens to the gentle shepherd when confronted with an indie rock makeover? And why on earth does he seem to have a penchant for the most extravagant hairstyles imaginable in some paintings? Get ready to expand your mind, if not your wardrobe. For the reader who craves a delightful blend of academia and cultural commentary, this book is a veritable smorgasbord of perspectives. It is an invitation to reconsider the quintessential image of Jesus, all while sipping your Earl Grey and wondering if perhaps you too could be anointed as the poster child for a new religious movement. Or at least, a hipster café with a side of existentialism. Now, let?s not forget the condition of this particular volume. Condition: This used copy is about as pristine as a student?s dorm room on a Friday night, which means it has character! Expect a few dog-eared pages, some rogue coffee stains that may or may not contain remnants of someone?s attempt at an espresso masterpiece, and perhaps a couple of notes in the margins suggesting that the reader had some very deep thoughts or just really needed to vent about their last date. It?s the kind of wear that adds a layer of intrigue and makes you wonder what deep philosophical discussions have taken place in its pages. So, if you?re ready to embark on this quirky excursion through time and ideation, arm yourself with a sense of humour and a willingness to reconsider everything you thought you knew about the most popular man in history. With a quirky narrative and a dash of irony, Geza Vermes has crafted a book that will both enlighten and bemuse, leaving you questioning more than just the face of Jesus. It?s a scholarly romp that is as much a journey into the mind as it is into art history.
