A tense, twisting thriller perfect for fans of Linda Fairstein.
Prosecutor Helen West's relationship with police officer Geoffrey Bailey is becoming more serious, but the couple is at odds because Bailey's protégé, Sergeant Ryan, is suspected of rape. As the evidence slowly mounts against Ryan, West and Bailey examine the seemingly open-and-shut case; a terrible crime warrants justice regardless of their feelings toward Ryan. But as they dig deeper, a new suspect emerges—one who possesses a cold-blooded intuition about women. West and Bailey quickly find themselves trying to clear Ryan's name and avenge a series of crimes with no evidence.
Frances Fyfield has spent much of her professional life practicing as a criminal lawyer, work that has informed her highly acclaimed novels. She has been the recipient of both the Gold and Silver Crime Writers' Association Daggers. She is also a regular broadcaster on Radio 4, most recently as the presenter of the series Tales from the Stave. She lives in London and in Deal, overlooking the sea, which is her passion.

Frances Fyfield's writing has been called 'brilliant' (The Cleveland Plain Dealer), 'elegant and unnerving' (The New York Times Book Review), and 'splendidly accomplished' (Chicago Tribune). Now, in this stylish mystery she hones her powers of writerly suspense and keen characterization to a new edge.No-nonsense attorney Helen West possesses a rare combination of jaded pragmatism and well-guarded vulnerability. Yet, rape is a crime that haunts her -- particularly her latest case where all the evidence all points to D. S. Ryan, the fellow police officer and best friend of her lover, Superintendent Geoffrey Bailey. But slowly, as West and Bailey delve into this seemingly open-and-shut crime, there emerges a man whose cold-blooded intuition about women guarantees him a ready welcome -- and rape, even murder, without a trace. Taschenbuch. Kartoniert. Etat : Gut. Erste Auflage dieser Ausgabe. 260 Seiten. 17,5 cm. Guter Zustand. "Fyfield's women are her strength . all are memorably alive. [But] above all, it is the author's voice, sensible, understanding, human and forgiving, beautifully accurate in its description . which makes this story not only deeply troubling but hopeful too. One of her best." --The Times. A horrific rape case turns into a dilemma for prosecutor Helen West and Superintendent Bailey when the accused is a police officer whom they both know. - Frances Fyfield (born 1948) is the pseudonym of Frances Hegarty. Fyfield is a British lawyer and crime-writer.[1] Born and brought up in Derbyshire, Frances Hegarty read English at Newcastle University. After graduation, she took a course in criminal law. She worked initially for the Metropolitan Police and later the Crown Prosecution Service. She claims "After a long diet of criminal law, including dangerous dogs, rape, mayhem and much, much murder, the indigestion of pity and fury provoked me to write. I wanted to write romance, but the domestically macabre always got in the way."[2] Fyfield has won several awards, including the Crime Writers' Association Duncan Lawrie Dagger for Blood From Stone in 2008 and the Silver Dagger for Deep Sleep. In addition the novel Safer than Houses was nominated for the Duncan Lawrie Dagger in 2006. She also writes psychological thrillers under the name of Frances Hegarty, among them, The Playroom, Half Light and Let's Dance, which was published in 1995. Her novels have been translated in fourteen different languages, and a number have been adapted for television. The most popular of Fyfield's novels, the Helen West series, have twice been adapted for television. Juliet Stevenson played Helen West in Trial by Fire (1999) and Amanda Burton later took on the role in a successful British television series in 2002. It has been written that "The defining feature of Fyfield's novels is their astonishing generosity of spirit, which may seem somewhat incongruous given her subject matter: insanity, incest, violence (often murder), emptiness, suicide -- all at the darkest extreme of human experience. Yet each of her characters is accorded a distinctive voice, that humanizes even the most unregenerate of them (Charles Tysall in Shadows on the Mirror and Perfectly Pure and Good being a partial exception)". wikipedia--Frances_Fyfield.
