Synopsis

The history of hypnotism is fascinating and bizarre. Derek Forrest's entertaining and enlightening book traces the various stages through which the original concept of "animal magnetism" developed, culminating in the practical ways hypnotism is employed in the late twentieth century. Anton Mesmer's life and theories are described in detail, together with the work of early pioneers including the somnambulists, with their supposed paranormal powers. Here is the full, turbulent history of hypnotism told with an appropriate sense of drama, and indeed humour.
