The covers are clean and unmarked - just lightly scuffed at the top of the spine. There is also a sliver of loss to the top outer corner of the back cover. Edges of covers just slightly rubbed. No bumps or serious creases. Corners sharp. No reading lean to the binding. Spine tight. No reading creases to the spine. No fading even to the spine colours. Page block edges clean. Internally also very good with a contemporaneous gift inscription in ink at the top of the first page, but no other annotations. Inner covers slightly browned and foxed at the edges. Interior pages clean. Paper stock lightly tanned as usual. ***159 pages. 180mm x 110mm. ***'Penguin Modern Poets is a series designed to introduce contemporary poetry to the general reader by publishing representative work by each of three modern poets in a single volume. The series eventually ran to 27 volumes, published between 1962 and 1979. ***First printing of the true first edition, in its original card covers. This is one of the less common later titles in the series, and is one of the most sought-after as it contains poetry by the avant-garde writer B. S. Johnson.
