Paperback. Etat : Good. There are poets who write poems, and then there are poets who appear to have written all the poems, just to be on the safe side. Pablo Neruda falls very much into the latter category, and this 1975 Penguin edition of Selected Poems offers a carefully chosen slice of that vast output?enough to give you a sense of the man without requiring you to clear an entire shelf. Neruda?s work has a reputation for range, and this selection does little to contradict it. You will find love poems of startling intensity, political reflections delivered with a calm certainty, and moments of quiet observation that somehow expand into something much larger. There are odes to ordinary things, meditations on history, and lines that feel as though they have been crafted to linger inconveniently in the mind long after you?ve closed the book. It is, in short, poetry that refuses to remain neatly contained. What makes Neruda particularly interesting is the way he manages to be both expansive and precise at the same time. One moment you are reading about something as simple as an object or a place; the next, you find yourself in the middle of a reflection on love, loss, or the general condition of being alive, wondering how exactly you got there. The translations, handled with care, aim to preserve that movement without making it feel overly laboured, which is no small achievement. Published by Penguin in 1975, the book carries the familiar, reassuringly understated design of the era?practical, readable, and entirely unconcerned with whether it might be considered fashionable. This particular copy is listed as Good , which in Crappy Old Books terms suggests it has been opened, read, and perhaps returned to more than once. The cover may show a little wear, the spine may have softened, and the pages may bear the faint signs of previous readers who paused, perhaps, at a line that felt unexpectedly relevant. It is not the sort of collection that demands to be read in order, or even all at once. More likely, it will be dipped into, revisited, and occasionally rediscovered, offering different things depending on when and why you happen to pick it up. Whether you approach it with a serious interest in poetry or simply the feeling that owning a volume of Neruda is something one ought to have sorted by now, it performs its role admirably. A generous, thoughtful selection from a poet who rarely did anything by halves, and a perfectly respectable way to suggest that your reading habits extend beyond the immediate and into territory where language is allowed to do rather more than simply convey information.
