Synopsis
A drunken impulse leads Michael Henchard to sell his wife at a country fair. Years later she and her daughter seek him out in Casterbridge, where he is now a rich and respected member of Wessex society. Although at the centre of a complex web of changing relationships, it is Henchard's own self-destructive nature which brings him down.

Thomas Hardy was born in 1840 and wrote both poetry and novels, including Far from the Madding Crowd, Tess of the D'Urbervilles and Jude the Obscure. He died in 1928.
