Synopsis
This rich anthology documents the wide variety of translations, adaptations, and imitations of Juvenal in English poetry from the 16th century to the present day. Taking Lucilius as his model, Juvenal attacked folly and vice, directing his satire towards symptoms of the ills of society. Martin Winkler's superb selection includes works by poets as various as John Skelton, Ben Jonson, William Wordsworth and Robert Lowell.

À propos de l?auteur
Juvenal (c.AD55-c.138) was a lawyer and satirist. His sixteen verse satires attacked Roman life and society and it was thought that he was later exiled to Egypt by Emperor Domitian.
Martin M. Winkler is Professor in the department of Modern and Classical Languages at George Mason University, Virginia. He is author of 'The Persona in Three Satires of Juvenal'.
Christopher Ricks is Professor of English at Boston University and series advisor to the Penguin Classics poetry list.
