Synopsis

Tony Harrison effectively ended speculation about his chances of the Poet Laureateship when he published the title poem of this collection in the Guardian. Laureate's Block is a brilliant new collection of largely political poems which express Harrison's republicanism with enormous wit and strength. Its particular subject is the horrors of the honours system, and Harrison spares no one - even friends like Sir Richard Eyre and Sir Harrisin Birtwhistle.
