In order to improve his health, complete a novel and escape a harsh English winter, he books a passage on the SS Caliban. As the ship cruises slowly towards Rangoon, Pinfold slips gradually into madness.

Evelyn Waugh (1903 - 1966), is considered chief chronicler of the 'Bright Young Things' and one of the century's most accomplished and funny novelists. His comic vision always had its black side and this darkened after the collapse of his first marriage, achieving moral weight when he converted to Catholicism in 1930.
