Hardcover. Etat : Near fine. Etat de la jaquette : Very good. First edition. Second printing (number line to "B"). A nice association copy, inscribed in the year of publication on the front free endpaper to another member of the Montana Gang: "For Russ [Chatham] -- A fellow traveler on the road to Zanzibar -- With love -- Gatz, Pine Creek, August 11, 1978." Like William "Gatz" Hjortsberg,Chatham was part of the so-called "Montana Gang," a literary group that also included Thomas McGuane, Richard Brautigan., and Jim Harrison, who used Chatham's paintings for the covers of each of his books starting withLegends of the Fall. Chatham was extraordinarily successful during the height of his career (his largest paintings sold for $1 million to celebrities), and his paintings remain iconic images of the Montana landscape and perhaps the Interior West at large. See also this great and wanderingtribute from Rick BassinAngler's Journal.Chatham was also a talented writer, best known for his iconic workThe Angler's Coast, and he was the publisher of Clark City Press, which published more than three dozen books including some of his own as well as books by Jim Harrison, Rick Bass, and others. Hjortsberg was an accomplished novelist and screenwriter (he met Thomas McGuane a the Yale School of Drama), a Stegner Fellow.Falling Angel, an occult mystery novel about a New York private eye and his exploits, was turned into a 1987 movie, Angel Heart, starring Mickey Rourke and Robert DeNiro. Sage green paper boards with a red cloth spine. A near fine copy with a little toning/sunning to lower board edges and spine tail. In a very good (and flashy!) jacket with general rubbing/scratching and wear to spine ends, including a one-inch tear on the rear panel along the spine. An excellent Montana gang association.
