The dust jacket is in fair condition (some tears along edges and folds, discolored spine). 9 ½ x 6 ¼, 577 pages, 38 ounces XX [From the dust jacket] In 1932 Raymond Moley assembled and directed the famous Brains Trust that supplied Franklin D. Roosevelt with the policies and speeches that assured his first election as President. Following the election, Mr. Moley continued as the new President's closest adviser and assistant, and helped initiate reforms that have influenced national policy ever since. THE FIRST NEW DEAL was nine years in the making. In it Mr. Moley re-creates the events and decisions of that crucial year 1932 from the vantage of a prime participant and witness. He tells, too, of the post-election contacts between Roosevelt and Herbert Hoover, the recruiting of the new Cabinet, the process that lay behind the writing of Roosevelt's first inaugural address, the rescue of the nation's banks, the planning and execution of the work of the Hundred Days' Congress, the history of the failure of the London Economic Conference, and the events that led up to Roosevelt's victory in 1936. Mr. Moley's vital story is enriched not only by his reflections on what happened in 1933 and thereafter, but also by a series of sixteen remarkable portraits of crucial figures in the first New Deal, among them Louis Howe, Jesse Jones, Gen. Hugh S. Johnson, Felix Frankfurter, and Joseph P. Kennedy. XX Raymond Moley, born in Berea, Ohio, in 1886, has had many careers. He is the author of, among other books, After Seven Years, 27 Masters of Politics, and The Republican Opportunity. Long chairman of the Department of Government at Barnard College, he also served Columbia University as Professor of Public Law.
