XX [From the dust jacket flaps] Adolf Berle believed that public service was everyone's duty, but such service, for him, did not usually mean public office, though he held his share of high appointive public posts. What suited him best was private public service, and this meant what he called "doing a job" on a particular problem set him by a President?Roosevelt, Truman, Kennedy, Johnson?or a Presidential candidate?Adlai Stevenson?or a beleaguered Latin-American democrat?José Figueres, Rómulo Betancourt?or in direct response to a severe public crisis?as in his classic 1932 paper "The Nature of the Difficulty," written with Louis Faulkner, and here printed in full for the first time. Adolf Berle began to keep a "diary file" in 1937. From this remarkably rich document and from other sources, the editors have produced a book that passes his full career in comprehensive review. No reader whose life has been shaped by the events and ideas that Adolf Berle touched?and such are legion?will want to miss this record of the splendid private public man whose enlistment in the cause of individual liberty and social justice never lapsed. XX Adolf A. Berle, who died in February 1971, had a long and distinguished career. He was, among other things, Treasurer of the City of New York from 1934 to 1938, Assistant Secretary of State of the United States from 1938 to 1944, and Ambassador to Brazil from 1945 to 1946. In 1960 he served as chairman of President John F. Kennedy's Task Force on Latin America, and in 1961 as special assistant to the Secretary of State. For more than forty years he was in the private practice of law in partnership with his brother Rudolf at Berle & Berle. At his death he was Professor Emeritus of Law of Columbia University and chairman of the board of The Twentieth Century Fund. N° de réf. du vendeur 001787
