Rass Whitley’s world falls apart the day the ditch bank breaks and the flood waters destroy his house. Rass saves Dad instead of the mules; Dad has to turn sharecropper, which means losing everything he’s worked for. The landlord then evicts Mr. McMulty-a black man and Rass’s good friend-and forces the Whitleys to move into his house. The unfairness of it almost makes Rass crazy. Still, he’s unprepared for what happens when honorable, God-fearing Mr. McMulty, in a moment of angry defiance fueled by years of injustice, commits an act of bloody revenge and comes to Rass for help. Rass is forced to choose between obeying his father and helping his friend in this dramatic novel set in Depression-era Missouri.
