Paperback. Etat : Good. A vivid and charming portrait of a large southern family, the Fairchilds, who live on a plantation in the Mississippi delta. Welty gathers the clan across crowded porches and noisy dining tables, following nine-year-old Laura into a kin group defined by its men and managed by its women. The narrative records the restless momentum of the cousins as seventeen-year-old Dabney defies family expectation to marry the plantation overseer, Troy Flavin. The plantation house at Shellmound surrounds the children with deaf great-aunts, uncleared card tables, and heirloom portraits, tracing their daily commotion along James's Bayou. The story, set in 1923, is exquisitely woven from the ordinary events of family life, centered around the visit of a young relative, Laura McRaven, and the family's preparations for her cousin Dabney's wedding. Multiple POV: Welty shifts perspective across the sprawling household, capturing clannish Fairchild pride through the watchful eyes of young Laura, the weary insight of Aunt Ellen, and the fierce independence of Robbie Reid. Historical Drama: A family fishing expedition to Drowning Lake nearly turns fatal on the Dry Creek trestle when Uncle George refuses to abandon young Maureen before the oncoming Yellow Dog train. Coming of Age: Nine-year-old Laura McRaven seeks belonging among her self-absorbed cousins, quietly hoarding secret treasures like her uncle's pipe while discovering that even the tightest kin cannot shield its members from grief. Also by This Author: The Collected Stories of Eudora Welty, The Ponder Heart and The Robber Bridegroom. N° de réf. du vendeur 00094618859
