Based on the fifth edition of "The Oxford Companion to English Literature", this is a reference book for the student or general reader. It focuses on the English literature of the British Isles but there is still coverage of the literature of other countries and of other disciplines which have influenced or have been influenced by literature. More than 5000 entries illuminate the plots of novel and plays; songs and poems; the lives and works of authors, poets, playwrights, essayists, philosophers, and historicans; fictional characters; literary movements; legends; theatres; periodicals. Entries have been updated and there are several new essays on topics such as anachronism, autobiography, foreign influences on English literature, parody and Senecan tragedy.

Based on the best-selling Oxford Companion to English Literature, this is an indispensable, compact guide to all aspects of English literature. Over 5,500 entries give unrivalled coverage of writers, works, historical context, literary theory, allusions, characters, and plot summaries. Discursive feature entries supply a wealth of information about important genres in literature. For the 3rd edition, the dictionary has been fully revised and updated. It now includes expanded coverage of world authors including notable authors in translation, coverage of new authors and titles, and new feature entries on short stories and metre. The appendices listing literary prize-winners, including the Nobel, Man Booker, and Pulitzer prizes, have all been updated. There is also a new timeline, chronicling the development of literature from its origins up to the present day. Written originally by a team of more than 140 distinguished contributors working under prizewinning author Margaret Drabble's editorial direction, and extensively updated and expanded for this new edition, this book provides essential reference for English students, teachers, and all other readers of literature in English.
Margaret Drabble is a distinguished novelist and biographer. Her many novels include Jerusalem the Golden (1967), The Needle's Eye (1972), The Witch of Exmoor (1996), and The Peppered Moth (2001). For many years she worked at the House of Commons. She was Margaret Drabble's assistant editor and has since contributed to and edited a number of reference works for the Oxford University Press. She lives and works in London. Daniel Hahn is a freelance writer and researcher. His publications include The Tower Menagerie (2003) and The Ultimate Book Guide (2004). He was Margaret Drabble's key writer and researcher on The Oxford Companion to English Literature.
