Michael Cook is a Professor of Near Eastern Studies at Princeton University. He is the author of several books on the history of the Middle East.

Just over a sixth of the world's population subscribes to the Muslim confession of faith. Who was this Muhammad? What do we know about his life? What did he believe? How did he see his role in the story of God's dealings with mankind? Muhammad was born in Mecca, in western Arabia, in the later sixth century AD. His mission as God's prophet was made known to him at the age of forty, when he saw a vision of the angel Gabriel. By the time of Muhammad's death Gabriel had revealed to him the entire content of the Koran, including the five basic rituals and duties of Islam: washing, prayer, almsgiving, fasting and pilgrimage. Michael Cook's incisive and sympathetic account of Muhammad's life and beliefs lets the traditional Muslim sources speak for themselves, especially on the importance of monotheism in the Muslim conception of the universe, of human history, and of such human activities as law and politics. But Mr. Cook also stands back from the traditional picture to ask how far it is historically justified, and to discuss possible parallels to Muhammad's thought. When Muhammad received his prophetic mission there was no reason to expect a new monotheistic religion to arise in Arabia, still less to conquer the whole of the Middle East and be with us in force today.
