String in Step, Cello Book 1 by Jan Dobbins aims to present a straghtforward and step-by-step guide to the very first stages of learning the cello. No prior knowledge at all is assumed and all the advice is presented in a clear and ordered manner. (Robert Max, Music Teacher, June 05)
The book is well laid out and uses large print which is always useful with beginners. There are pleasant illustrations making the pages look nteresting and inviting for young children. New material is clearly introduced and logically approached . . . One enormous benefit is the CD which accompanies the book - it is always more interesting to play with an accompaniment . . . The book does have much to recommend it, including nice pieces and a well-recorded CD with traditional accompaniments. (MMA Ensemble Jan 05)
This volume is presented in a fun way, with the diagrams explaining technical points interspersed with little characters full of useful tips and reminders. (ESTA News and Views Winter 2004)
Jan Dobbins is a former Music Adviser and Head of an LEA Instrumental Music Service. Now she divides her time between delivering professional development courses, teaching string players, exploring music with children aged 3-11, composing instrumental music and writing songs.
