Synopsis

George Templeton Strong's Journal is one of the great primary documents of nineteenth century America. Strong, a prominent figure in New York life, kept the journal from the mid-1830s until his death four decades later. Over this forty-year period, Strong, an avid and articulate music-lover, attended a great number and variety of musical events, and recorded his response to them in his diary. The editor has written connecting sections that put these diary entries into the broader context of New York musical activity at the time. These were the years when New York City was becoming the most important American cultural centre, and when its musical world was expanding year by year. The book is a definitive portrait of the New York musical scene from the 1830s to the 1870s. There are three volumes. Readership: historians of music and American society.
