This study provides the first comprehensive review of pattern formation in ciliates, along with an analysis of general mechanisms of pattern formation. The author emphasizes the integrative mechanisms that encompass the entire cell surface, and pays particular attention to genetic and non-genetic mirror-image reversals of asymmetry. A conceptual model for large-scale intracellular organization is included.
