The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals is a book by Charles Darwin, published in 1872, concerning genetically determined aspects of behaviour. It was published thirteen years after On the Origin of Species and, alongside his 1871 book The Descent of Man (of which it was originally intended to form a part), it is Darwin's main consideration of human origins. In this book, Darwin seeks to trace the origins of such human characteristics as the pursing of the lips in moments of concentration and the mental confusion which typically accompanies blushing. Before Darwin, mental life had often been considered in terms of associationist psychology. Darwin's biological approach links mental states to the neurological organization of movement; and he sought out the opinions of some leading British psychiatrists, notably James Crichton-Browne, in the preparation of the book which forms his main contribution to psychology. Amongst the innovations with this book are Darwin's circulation of a questionnaire in his preparatory research; simple psychology experiments on emotional recognition with his friends and family; and (borrowing from Duchenne de Boulogne, a physician at the Salpêtrière) the use of photographs in his presentation of scientific information. The Expression of the Emotions is an important landmark in the history of book illustration.

He also includes new illustrations that Darwin discussed, but which have never appeared in previous editions. The book reminds us that, in addition to being the nineteenth century's most influential thinker, Darwin was also a writer of consummate skill. CHARLES DARWIN was born in Shrewsbury in 1809, the son of a doctor, and grandson of both Erasmus Darwin and of the industrialist Josiah Wedgwood. He entered Edinburgh University in 1825, where he studied medicine before transferring, in 1827, to Christ's College, Cambridge. In 1831, Darwin embarked on the Beagle, bound for South America. He returned in 1836, and in 1839 published his Journal of Researches into the Geology and Natural History of the various countries visited by H. M. S. Beagle. His great work, On the Origin of Species by means of Natural Selection, was published on 24 November 1859. It was an immediate success: the first edition of 1,250 copies sold out the same day. In The Descent of Man, and Selection in Relation to Sex (1871 ), Darwin laid out his theory of sexual selection, arguing that human beings had evolved from higher primates. A year later, The Expression of the Emotions in Man and Animals was published. There then followed The Effects of Cross and Self Fertilization in the Vegetable Kingdom (1876) and The Formation of Vegetable Mould through the Action of Worms (1881 ).
