Appraisal theory has become one of the most active aproaches in the domain of emotion psychology. The appraisal process consists of the subjective evaluation that occurs during the individual's encounter with significant events in the environment, thus determining the nature of the emotional reaction and experience. The organism's interpretation of events and situations elicits and differentiates its emotional responses, although the exact processes involved and the limits of the theory are still a matter of debate and are currently the object of active research. This volume is intended to become the primary source of information on appraisal for all those interested in emotion, from beginning graduate students to accomplished researchers in emotion psychology.

... excellent collection ... an extremely important contribution to understanding emotions in general and appraisal theory in particular. The book further advances appraisal theory and makes it more accessible to the research community. (American Journal of Psychology)

Buch. Etat : Neu. nach der Bestellung gedruckt Neuware - Printed after ordering - The scientific study of emotion has long been dominated bytheories emphasizing the subjective experience of emotionsand their accompanying expressive and physiologicalresponses. The processes by which different emotions areelicited has received less attention, the implicitassumption being that certain emotions arise automaticallyin response to certain types of events or situations. Suchan assumption is incompatible with data showing that similarsituations can provoke a range of emotions in differentindividuals, or even the same individual at different times.Appraisal theory, first suggested by Magda Arnold andRichard Lazarus, was formulated to address this shortcomingin our understanding of emotion. The central tenet ofappraisal theory is that emotions are elicited according toan individual's subjective interpretation or evaluation ofimportant events or situations. Appraisal research focuseson identifying the evaluative dimensions or criteria thatpredict which emotion will be elicited in an individual, aswell as linking the appraisal process with the production ofemotional responses. This book represents the firstfull-scale summary of the current state of appraisalresearch. Separate sections cover the history of apraisaltheory and its fundamental ideas, the views of some of themajor theorists currently active in the field, theoreticaland methodological problems with the appraisal approachincluding suggestions for their resolution, social, culturaland individual differences and the application of appraisaltheory to understanding and treating emotional pathology, and the methodology used in appraisal research includingmeasuring and analyzing self-report, physiological, facial, and vocal indicators of appraisal, and simulating appraisalprocesses via computational models. Intended for advancedstudents and researchers in emotion psychology, it providesan authoritative assessment and critique of the currentstate of the art in appraisal research.
