Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. Small ownership inscription, otherwise a very tidy copy. Rua Kenana was one of many Maori prophetic leaders of the 19th and 20th centuries. He called himself Te Mihaia hou, the new messiah, and was the leader of a section of the Tuhoe at a time when their land, the Urewera country, was threatened by possible prospecting and milling. Withdrawing to Maungapohatu, in the heart of Urewera, he established a community. This work is a history of Rua and his people, of the destruction of the community, by the government during World War I, and the struggle to start all over again. N° de réf. du vendeur 052435

Soft cover. Etat : Very Good. 1st Edition. Mihaia Prophet Rua Kenana and His Community at Mangapohatu By Judith Binney, Gillian Chaplin, Craig Wallace. VERY SCARCE. Publisher: Oxford University Press, Auckland, New Zealand, 1987, Reprinted with corrections. Large softback, some shelf/edge-wear, minor marks, no inscriptions, light stain to bottom edge. Rua Kenana was an extraordinary prophetic leader from the Urewera. Resisting threats to expel the T?hoe people from their ancestral lands, he established a remarkable community at Maungapohatu, identifying himself as the 'M?haia' or 'Messiah' for T?hoe. Judith Binney, Gillian Chaplin and Craig Wallace researched the history of the community in the 1970s, working first with a collection of photographs that they took to the Urewera. Sharing these photographs with descendants of Rua and his followers, they found that 'strangers opened their hearts to us, and shared their stories'. This biographical account focuses on a dramatic moment in Urewera history, one that incorporated a shocking episode in early twentieth-century New Zealand. The rich photographic record documents not only the police assault on the Maungapohatu community but also the lives of the people and Rua's utopian vision. The prophet lived into the 1930s, a leader still working to support and sustain his followers. Described on publication as 'an unparalleled record of a community through time', this remarkable history has been in demand since first publication by Oxford University Press in 1979.
