Synopsis

The Making of a Frontier is a first hand narrative of the British Empire's final phase of expansion in late nineteenth century British India. The references, dates, and political analysis represent a primary source of imperial dynamics and mentalities. Durand details the political subordination of the northern regions and Kashmiri dependencies that became Pakistan's northern areas and includes notes on ethnography, archeology, flora and fauna. The book is a faithful account of the policy pursued on the Gilgit frontier, of the steps taken to give it effect, and of the results attained.

This book was originally published prior to 1923, and represents a reproduction of an important historical work, maintaining the same format as the original work. While some publishers have opted to apply OCR (optical character recognition) technology to the process, we believe this leads to sub-optimal results (frequent typographical errors, strange characters and confusing formatting) and does not adequately preserve the historical character of the original artifact.
