Anna Katharina Hildegard Weinrich , The book opens with an account of the changes which have taken place in African agriculture in Rhodesia since the beginning of colonization. A detailed analysis is given of two tribal trust lands - the most common form of agricultural settlement for Africans in that country - including government policies and administrative control of these areas, voluntary and forced adjustment to land shortage, and the economic resources and productivity of peasant cultivators. Settlements under individual land tenure (the purchase areas) are examined, as are government policies with regard to these farms, the internal transformation of these communities and their economic re-sources and productivity. The third section of the book deals with irrigation schemes, a new government controlled settlement type, and the reaction of the people to irrigation farming. Case histories of farmers are added to each section to provide practical illustrations of the problems faced by Africans engaged in agriculture in Rhodesia.
