The aside is a familiar convention in drama, but surprisingly little has been written about it in connection with Greek theater, where the aside originated and developed. In Actors and Audience, David Bain traces the aside back to its earliest appearance in Greek tragedy, examining its use in Euripides, Aeschylus and Sophocles, before moving on to a consideration of Old Comedy dramatists from Aristophanes to Menander, New Comedy, and Roman Comedy. Throughout the book, Bain offers considerable insight into how conventions mediate between author, actor and audience, helping or hindering the degree to which spectators "participate" in the stage action.

The aside is a familiar device in European drama, but surprisingly little has been written about it in connection with the drama in which it originated and developed. In this book it is suggested that it originated in Greek tragedy. Asides and some related phenomena in tragedy are collected to demonstrate the validity of this argument.

Oxford University Press, Oxford, 1987. X,230p. Paperback. Nice copy. 'This excellent book investigates the aside as a dramatic convention which demands that the audience accept a certain lack of realism, and some other conventions connected with the dramatic illusion. (?) B.?s main achievement is to have clarified certain conventions of New Comedy and to have shown the different ways in which Menander and Roman comedy used these conventions, but he also offers acute and judicious comment on scores of passages (indexed), including many which he excludes from his definition of asides.'
