Books VI-X of Livy's history of Rome describe the beginnings of Rome's conquest of Italy in the fourth century BC and contain some of Livy's finest writing. This is the first full-scale, scholarly commentary to be written on this part of the history in modern times. The first of three volumes, this book contains an extensive introduction and the commentary to Book VI. The introduction provides a full analysis of the Roman annalistic tradition, of Livy's style and narrative technique, and of the manuscript tradition; the commentary devotes equal attention to historical, literary, linguistic, and textual matters. The remaining two volumes, which are forthcoming, will deal with Books VII-VIII and IX-X respectively. An indispensable work of reference for anyone interested in Latin literature and early Roman history, as well as for scholars of Livy himself, these three volumes represent a major new contribution to Latin scholarship.

The depth of Oakley's scholarship is astonishing; his treatment of long-running debates judicious and succinct. He is mild about other scholars, even those he disagrees with. It is an awe-inspiring feat.......Stephen Oakley has produced an impressive edifice.
a splendid achievement, a worthy successor to Ogilvie's in every respect, one that will immediately take its place as a major source of reference for matters far beyond the second pentad or Livy's oeuvre as a whole. Latinists well find a mine of information on matters of style and language, including judicious remarks on what can properly be designated choice, poetic, archaic, mannered, and so forth. Historians will find much of value in O.'s broad introductiory survey and detailed notes ... a full and balanced account of the Roman annalistic tradition, including narrative techniques, rhetorical aims, and debt to Hellenistic historiography ... O.'s overview of the nature and growth of annalistic history is the most useful known to me. (T. J. Luce, The Classical Review)
