This book is not a grammar, but rather a discription of the major features of German in 'linguistic' terms, according to the principles of modern linguistics. It considers aspects of German phonology, morphology, syntax, and semantics, as well as varieties and discourse, from a theoretical perspective, though theory is discussed only in so far as it can throw light on the structure of the language. The aim is not to provide definitive answers to the questions raised, but rather to foster a linguistically informed approach to the discription of the language. No work of the kind has been available in English up to now, and the book is intended to fill this gap. Students and teachers of German, undergraduate level upwards. Students of linguistics.

The new edition of The Structure of German has been fully revised to take account of developments in the subject. The author describes German phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, and pragmatics. He introduces linguistic theory in order to throw light on every aspect of the language, providing students with a linguistically informed and accessible approach to the description of the language. Updated guides to further reading are given at the end of each chapter, and the book's usefulness for students and teachers has been enhanced by the addition of exercises and discussion questions. This is an ideal introduction to German linguistics. It may also be used as an introduction to linguistics for students of German.
Review from previous edition 'Beautifully produced and written, and laudably clear in what it sets out to do ... Both erudite and stimulating.' German Teaching
'A book which fills a basic need of German programs in English-speaking institutions: an introduction to the linguistic investigation of contemporary German ... It should prove to be a valuable textbook to accompany semester-long courses, and individual chapters could also be used to introduce more specialized topics in the analysis of modern German.' Zeitschrift für Dialektologie und Linguistik
'A valuable addition to the body of works on contemporary German' Zeitschrift fur Germanistische Linguistik
