The achievements of the Roman world have profoundly affected all subsequent European and world civilization. This compact yet comprehensive volume surveys all aspects of the legacy of Rome - from concepts of government, law, philosophy, and religion, to culture, science and technology, and social life - and identifies the significant ideas and developments in Roman civilization which form such a large part of our heritage. First published more than fifty years ago, this classic account of the influence of the Roman world is now reissued.

This book is an endeavour to trace in many 1ields the extent of the inheritance which the modern world owes to Ancient Rome. The chapters have been written independently, and it will be seen that they are not all on the same plan. Some writers have described the contribution of Rome to civilization, and have left it to the reader to infer the extent of the legacy :others have traced the steps by which the legacy has come to us, and to this subject Professor Foligno has devoted a valuable chapter. The editors thanks are due to all the contributors, especially toM r. A squith, who found time to write an Introduction to the volume. Also toM r. Angus Davidson for his assistance in translating Professor Giovannoni schapter, and to lessor R. S. Conway for the two photographs otrating the probable site of Virgil sfarm. C. B.
