9780198285113: International Comparisons of the Distribution of Household Wealth

Synopsis

This volume reports some of the latest available evidence on inequality in household wealth for Canada, France, Sweden, the UK, the USA, and West Germany. The findings can be summarized under three headings. The first is the gradual but persistent decline in the degree of wealth inequality among households during the twentieth century. Second, despite this significant downward trend in inequality, household wealth is still highly concentrated today. Third, if social security is also included in the household portfolio, it can be seen that the development of retirement systems has equalized wealth holdings. Academic and government economists, and social administrators; graduate courses on income distribution
