Synopsis

Central and Eastern Europe focuses on the challenges and dilemmas posed to stability in the former USSR, and Central and Eastern Europe by the radical changes brought about by the collapse of Communist rule. Recognizing the need to adopt an approach that does justice to what is unquestionably a momentous process of change, it focuses on the security implications of continuing developments in the political, social, economic, and military spheres.

The heart of the book is a set of case studies examining in detail the situation in a number of countries: Hungary, Poland, the Czech and Slovak republics, Russia, Ukraine, Belarus, the Baltic states, the Balkan region, and the former Yugoslavia. By way of introduction to the case studies, a further section of essays assesses developments in Central and Eastern Europe from a broader thematic perspective, focusing on such important issues as the role of European organizations in the ethnic conflicts currently much in evidence throughout the region.

Revue de presse

`excellent SIPRI anthology' NOD & Conversion

`Regina Cowen Karp has edited a surprising volume ... a text which is generally both useful and coherent.' International Affairs

`Their well-argumented analysis will be of great interest to scholars of international relations and the changing global order, to all those seeking to understand the radical transformations in this part of the globe and to contribute to create a more stable and secure international environment.' Democratization

The countries are discussed collectively as well as individually through essays by scholars associated with SIPRI. These are undoubtedly the product of not only deep research but outstanding scholarship...A volume which will indeed enrich the social scientists and more particularly students of geo-politics. (U.S.I. Journal April-June 1995)

Karp's essay in the book edited by her is a splendid survey of security issues facing the undivided, though not yet united, Europe ... The book effectively analyses the external constraints on the "transitions" in the region. (Political Studies)

A thorough and valuable account of the security situation in post-Communist states at a time when the war in former Yugoslavia was at its worst. A commendable wealth of information on security and military doctrines - a rounded, almost encyclopedic catalogue of the possible sources of conflict in the early 1990s. Kieran Williams. The Slavonic Review.
