This book examines an area of the world where arms control is almost non-existent-China, India, and Pakistan-and takes the unusual approach of considering the implications of conventional arms transfers, and in particular India's strategic defenses, for nuclear stability. Building on an analysis of their internal politics and attitudes to nuclear policies, it concludes that certain apparently defensive systems, particularly counter-air systems, have considerable implications for the retention of nuclear capabilities in the region.

Paperback. Etat : Very Good. Minimal wear, no creasing or damage. Stockholm International Peace Research Institute. As the nuclear weapons states continue to reduce their nuclear arsenals and international efforts to prevent the proliferation of nuclear weapons are reinvigorated, South Asia remains a unique region almost entirely unencumbered by nuclear arms control. Despite the recent popularity of the notion that nuclear deterrence is stabilizing the Indo-Pakistani conflict, there is good reason to believe that the risks of war and the use of nuclear weapons are not fully appreciated. Nevertheless, the prospects for negotiated measures to improve the situation are not good because of the dmoestic politics on both sides. N° de réf. du vendeur 006914
