Partial differential equations (PDEs) are a central concept in mathematics. Their power lies in their universality: there is a huge and ever-growing range of real-world phenomena to which they can be applied, from fluid mechanics and electromagnetism to probability and finance. This is an enthusiastically and clearly written guide to the theory and applications of PDEs. Its central aim is to set out, in an informal yet rigorous manner, a mathematical framework within which to assess any given PDE. Space is devoted as much to explicit methods of solution as to more general qualitative ideas, the most important of which is the concept of well-posedness. This attribute is vital in deciding the accuracy to which the problem can be solved numerically, and it becomes increasingly important as the power of computer software grows. Prerequisites here have been kept to a minimum: some familiarity with ordinary differential equations, functions of a single complex variable, and the calculus of functions of several real variables are all that is needed. This book is intended for final year undergraduates and graduate students in applied mathematics and engineering.

Review from previous edition 'This is a clearly written guide to the theory and applications of partial differential equations....' MATH
' This book is thus greatly to be welcomed, as it sets out theory and methods for partial differential equations from the perspective of applied mathematicians who are concerned with the actual application of mathematics to model physics...The narrative style is chatty and informal with a strong personal stamp.A liberal lacing of emotive expressions encourages the discerning reader to empathise with the author's instincts by reading danger signals, recognising red-letter days and seeing analyses as trivial, tedious, delicate or hair-raising.'Feel' and experience are invaluable tools when attacking new problems, and I applaud the authors' attempts to impart some of theirs along with the technical content. Overall, a very worthwhile read, and I'll be glad to have a copy on my shelf' Journal of Fluid Mechanics
'For departments still offering serious PDE courses, Applied Partial Differential Equations provides a comprehensive and challenging text ... Able mathematics undergraduates ... should all find something they can take from the text ... There are numerous footnotes providing helpful physical explanations ... The end of each chapter is well furnished with interesting exercises' THES
Partial differential equations are a central concept in mathematics. They are used in mathematical models of a huge range of real-world phenomena, from electromagnetism to financial markets. This new edition of the well-known text by Ockendon et al., providing an enthusiastic and clear guide to the theory and applications of PDEs, provides timely updates on: transform methods (especially multidimensional Fourier transforms and the Radon transform); explicit representations of general solutions of the wave equation; bifurcations; the Wiener-Hopf method; free surface flows; American options; the Monge-Ampere equation; linear elasticity and complex characteristics; as well as numerous topical exercises. This book is ideal for students of mathematics, engineering and physics seeking a comprehensive text in the modern applications of PDEs
