Synopsis

The causes and consequences of acid rain are subjects of considerable concern, controversy, and confusion. The effects of acid deposition on the chemistry of lakes and streams, and on the survival of fish and other aquatic life, have been greatly clarified by the results of the recent Anglo-Scandinavian research programme. A concise, non-specialist account of the results, their interpretation, and implication is here presented by the Director of the programme.

The book includes chapters on emissions, transport, and deposition of acid pollution; hydrochemical studies in catchments; catchment process studies; catchment manipulation experiments; the role of hydrology and soil chemistry; palaeolimnological studies; the toxic effects of acidification on fish and other aquatic life; and catchment modelling studies.

The highly interdisciplinary nature of the research will appeal to a wide range of scientists and to policy-makers interested in acid rain and its consequences. It will also be useful for postgraduates and third-year first degree students in the environmental sciences.

Revue de presse

'The advantage of a single author attacking such a diverse range of topics is stylistic consistency and brevity ... an attractively presented and very readable account of a complex topic ... the book will serve as a very reasonably priced introduction to surface water acidification in Europe.' Malcolm Cresser, University of Aberdeen

'I will certainly be able to recommend Mason's book to my students interested in acidification processes, because it explains so much of the science in a careful and thorough way. The author is to be congratulated, as it is no easy task to do this in a mere 126 pages.' Times Higher Education Supplement

'it is refreshing to read a clear and balanced book by someone who has been at the centre of a research project on the subject ... The programme, of course, only deals with one facet of a much larger subject, but because of its importance, the book is worthy of our attention.' Environmental Policy and Practice, Volume 2, Number 4, 1993
