In the second edition of this classic work a section of notes was included, and a new chapter was added which dealt with some aspects of scholarship since the Renaissance. For this third edition the authors have responded to the urgent need to take account of the very large number of discoveries in this rapidly advancing field of knowledge by substantially revising or enlarging certain sections.

'For the third edition the authors have not only brought the bibliographical notes up to date but also made extensive amendments and additions, both small and large, throughout the text.' James Diggle, Queens' College, Cambridge, The Classical Review
'This is a very fine book indeed. The text is written with admirable lucidity, wit and charm. The book itself is a clearly printed and stout paperback, well worth the reommended retail price of $44.95, and of course, as befits a volume produced by the Oxford University Press on this topic above all, the text is flawless. Clearly I would recommend Scribes and Scholars as a valuable acquisition for a school library which could be consulted with profit by senior students ... this book, with its overwhelming proof of the centrality of Classics in the western tradition, is essential reading.' M. Dyson, University of Queensland, Ancient History, 1992, No. 2
'This enlarged version remains a valuable resource for both graduate student and scholar. Scribes and Scholars is a book which has done much good and will continue to do so.' E. Christian Kopff, University of Colorado, Classical Bulletin (1992)
'The third edition of this superb work has been carefully revised to reflect advances in classical scholarship since publication of the previous edition. The work is indispensable for classical students who have not read the previous edition, and recommended for those who want recent information on an essential subject.' Gerald O'Sullivan, Stockton State College, Classical World

Third edition of the standard English-language introduction to the transmission of classical literature from antiquity to the modern era, widely regarded as one of the most influential surveys of the manuscript tradition of Greek and Latin texts. First published in 1968 and extensively revised for this third edition, the work traces the survival of classical learning through the changing institutions, technologies, and scholarly practices that preserved ancient texts across more than two millennia. The opening chapters examine book production and scholarship in the ancient world, including the Library of Alexandria, Hellenistic textual criticism, Roman literary culture, the transition from roll to codex, and the impact of Christianization on the survival of pagan literature. Subsequent chapters follow the fortunes of classical texts in the Byzantine East and the medieval Latin West, treating such subjects as the ninth-century Byzantine renaissance, the role of Ireland and Anglo-Saxon England in preserving learning, the Carolingian revival and the development of Caroline minuscule, medieval monastic libraries, Montecassino, the twelfth-century renaissance, scholastic scholarship, and the transmission of Greek learning to Western Europe. The Renaissance section surveys the recovery of classical texts by the Italian humanists, including Petrarch, Salutati, Poggio Bracciolini, Lorenzo Valla, Politian, Cardinal Bessarion, and Erasmus, as well as the emergence of Greek printing under Aldus Manutius and Marcus Musurus. The later chapters extend the narrative through early modern and modern scholarship, discussing the development of textual criticism, palaeography, manuscript collecting, the discovery of palimpsests and papyri, and the work of major scholars such as Richard Bentley. Particularly valuable is the substantial final chapter on textual criticism, which provides a clear exposition of stemmatic theory, recension, manuscript relationships, indirect textual transmission, common forms of scribal corruption, and the interpretation of the critical apparatus found in scholarly editions. Supplemented by extensive bibliographical notes, an index of manuscripts, a general index, and plates illustrating important manuscripts discussed in the text, the volume remains an indispensable guide for students and scholars of classics, palaeography, codicology, manuscript studies, and the history of scholarship.
