This is an introductory text to human geography with a difference. It begins with the idea that the way in which we see the world is a matter of interpretation: it depends upon who you are - a Third World peasant or a resident of Los Angeles, for example. Cultural representations of the globe, both historical and contemporary, figure prominently. This line of thinking is developed by showing how different places, different parts of the globe, are constructed through a web of economic, political, and social connections that shape and reshape them. From this focus on place, the book moves back to the global level and the question of space.
