The structures of sugars attached to cells and proteins have been investigated by biochemists for more than a hundred years. The discipline of glycobiology has emerged more recently, as key principles about the biological functions of these complex sugars have been established and their importance for the study of cell biology and immunology has become apparent. Introduction to Glycobiology is the first textbook to present an introduction to the essential elements of glycobiology that is readily accessible to undergraduates and other non-specialists. It focuses on coherent stories about what sugars do for cells and organisms. The importance of glycosylation in protein secretion and stability, cell-cell adhesion and signalling, and innate and adaptive immunity are emphasised. The ways in which glycobiology explains human disease are discussed throughout the book in order to place the subject in a biomedical context. The book is illustrated throughout with all new custom-drawn figures. The simple organisation, highlighted terms and annotated key reference lists make the text readable and accessible. Companion Web Site All the figures from the book will be available to download free from the companion web site at http://www oup.com/uk/best.textbooks/biochemistry/glycobiolo gy/. A sample chapter will be available on line from 1 August 2002.

Sugars are familiar as vital sources of energy. Yet the biological importance of the sugars extends well beyond their value as cellular fuels. Introduction to Glycobiology reveals the true impact of the sugars on biological systems, explaining their function at the molecular, cellular, and organismal level. Employing a two-part structure, the book leads us through essential principles and concepts upon which the discipline is grounded, before exploring the diverse roles of sugars throughout biological systems, including development, cell signalling, and protein trafficking. It also emphasises the importance of glycobiology in disease, and explains how an understanding of the link between the two is enabling us to develop new therapeutic strategies. Taking the student from the fundamental principles to the frontiers of the subject, and with a wealth of learning features to get the most out of their studies, Introduction to Glycobiology remains the ideal resource for students and teachers alike. Online Resource Centre For students: · Updates - surveys of key developments in the field, provided on a six-monthly basis, to maintain currency · Library of 3D, rotatable molecular structures to help students visualize structures and gain a proper appreciation of the link between structure and function · Hyperlinked references to facilitate access to primary literature For registered adopters of the book: · Full colour figures, available for download individually or as PowerPoint slides with key explanatory points · Answers to end-of-chapter questions · Journal Clubs - suggested papers and discussion questions linked to topics covered in the book
Review from previous edition This book is an absolute must for all lecturers and students alike of glycobiology ... Wholeheartedly recommended. (Microbiology Today, November 2006)
It covers the breadth of glycobiology very well and provides sufficient depth to provide a platform for further research. (Dr Gavin M. Brown, Lancaster University)
Others are not written as clearly or concisely as Taylor and Drickamer. (Prof Y.C. Lee, John Hopkins University)
I prefer this book highly above the other text books available. (Prof Dr J.P. Kamerling, Utrecht University)
Dr Taylor and Professor Drickamer should be congratulated on writing a textbook that presents the enormous subject of glycobiology with energy and enthusiasm and doing so in a manner that should be accessible to their target audience. (Biochemist e-volution, April 2006)
