Synopsis

The acceptance of clinical immunology as an important medical speciality has resulted in rapid expansion in the use of the immunological investigations concerned. In the process many methods have been modified and there is wide variety for both clinical immunology tests offered and the techniques used in determining the results throughout the world. This book reflects the current practice of clinical imunology centres throughout the UK, Europe and North America. Not all of the tests covered are available in each centre, but most laboratories offering a clinical immunological service will undertake a high proportion of the methods described in this book. The book has been designed to emphasize the clinical states with which patients present; thus the failure of the immune system and its various components and their malignant transformation involve some overlap of techniques. Abberations of the immune response have been divided into autoimmunity and allergy, the former being divided, as it is clinically, into organ specific and non-organ specific varieties.

Revue de presse

'the book is a good buy and should be of use to laboratory staff for the technical aspects and clinicians as a "how-to" book' The Journal of Clinical Pathology, July 1991

'well-written, practical textbook that provides important information on clinical and laboratory immunology in a concise manner' Alan L. Landay, Ph.D. St Luke's Medical Center, Chicago, The New England Journal of Medicine, Feb 1992

The book provides detailed knowledge in specialised areas, but also a genuine overview. I found that there was a very good balance between separate sections, chapters in sections and material in individual chapters. I simply cannot imagine that it would be possible to include more up-to-date information in a book of such volume. This excellent book is an invaluable tool for graduate students, medical practitioners, clinical immunologists and specialists in many specialties, none of whom, will find more detailed and up-to-date knowledge in an easy to read and condensed form. (Momir Macanovic, Immunology News, October 1997)
