Giorgio Parisi graduated from Rome University in 1970. He worked as a researcher at the Frascati National Laboratories in Italy from 1971 to 1980; during this period he visited Columbia University, the IHES (Bures-sur-Yvette), and the ENS (Paris) for one year, respectively. Parisi became a Professor of Theoretical Physics at the Università di Roma "La Sapienza." Dr. Parisi received the Feltrinelli Prize for Physics in 1986. His actual research covers the area of numerical simulations for lattice gauge theories, spin glasses and optimization problems, and neural networks. He was elected as a foreign associate to the National Academy of Sciences in 2003.
Specifically written to introduce researchers and advanced students to the modern developments in statistical mechanics and field theory, this book's leitmotiv is functional integration and its application to different areas of physics. The book acts as both an introduction to and a lucid overview of the major problems in statistical field theory.
