This textbook analyzes the challenges of a user-centered approach to software development, covering the spectrum from creative user interface design to software engineering. It is one of the first books to bridge this gap. It encourages the view of interactive system design as broader than simply user interface design and more practical than human-computer interaction. To enable instructors to use the book for teaching design as well as the analysis of design, the second edition will begin with a new Part I devoted to design issues (the user interface, graphic design, and color) before the analytical material is introduced. The new edition is also noteworthy for its coverage of the Web and Web-based issues. The accompanying Website covers designing Web-based applications as well as porting existing applications to the Web. There are also guidelines for website design.
