Quatrième de couverture

In revising classic works in Literacy, Allyn & Bacon celebrates the contributions its authors and their research have made to the discipline. The new Allyn & Bacon Classics in Literacy series honors these authors and their work. Providing students with an updated context, each title in the series includes a new foreword, written by one of today's top scholars, offering a fresh, in-depth analysis of the revised book and its enduring contributions.

Cohesive, engaging, and generous with carefully selected content, Teaching Them to Read is a modern classic in the field. Reflecting both current research and recent classroom observations, this outstanding text gives your students specific suggestions on how to promote literacy in ways that are interesting and meaningful for students. The content covered is comprehensive but not overwhelming—it shows, with some deliberate repetition and periodic summaries, what is most important. Retaining its clear, conversational writing style, the new edition has been substantially updated and revised to reflect the current interest in whole language while recognizing the existing realities of basal use in the classroom.

Author Bio:

The foreword is written by Richard L. Allington; the Fien Distinguished Professor of Education at the University of Florida, Gainesville. He was a co-recipient of the Albert J. Harris Award from the International Reading Association for his "contributions to the better understanding of reading and learning disabilities". Dick is also a past president of the National Reading Conference and has been elected to membership in the Reading Hall of Fame. He is the author of over 100 research articles and several books, including Classrooms That Work: They Can all Read and Write, Schools that Work: All Children Readers and Writers, and What Really Matters for Struggling Readers.

Dolores Durkin is Professor of Education Emeritus, University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign. Earlier, she was on the faculties of the University of California and Columbia University.

Dr. Durkin is a well-known lecturer and researcher. One of her first longitudinal studies, begun in the 1960s, documented the fact that young children not yet in kindergarten were learning to read at home. This research was reported in a book entitled Children Who Read Early. Subsequent influential studies showed that comprehension abilities were assessed in elementary school classrooms, but not taught. This finding, along with numerous others reported in the literature, originated in classroom-observation studies.

Frequent observations of classrooms, teachers, and students, along with Professor Durkin's earlier experiences as an elementary school teacher, account for textbooks, including Teaching Them to Read, that have a ring of reality in the recommendations they make. Other books include Phonics and the Teaching of Reading and Teaching Young Children to Read.

Recognition of Professor Durkin's contributions include; the William S. Gray Achievement Award, from the International Reading Association, and an incitation to membership in the Reading Hall of Fame.
