On an occasion similar to the present one, when the Editor returned from a tour of literary mendicancy, he took the opportunity of emphasising the truth, which even the most responsible layman is apt to forget, that a contribution of letters has a potentiality of guineas as well as of art and sentiment. And lest there be any suspicion as to the extent of the generosity involved, let it be repeated here that the true artist has no second best. The fact that many of the contributions contained in this book are from writers who have no direct associations with Edinburgh, seems to demonstrate the universality of charity. Of course, it would be idle to deny that the response in many instances was prompted by the catnaradie of the craft. Such being the case, the Editor conceives it necessary to make a personal acknowledgment of the kind and generous treatment he has received at the hands of so many of his friends, to whom, however, the distinction of the cause must have made a not very secondary appeal.
