To come upon Rye from the land side that is, from the heart of Kent is to see her but imperfectly, with half-averted vision. The train, a handful of trucks, halts at the foot of a sleepy mound. With the poor approach suggested 1modem workmens cottages and the cheap masonry of a station the beauty of the upper roofs on the hill is but dimly apprehended.
