WHAT WOULD IT BE LIKE IF A LOOK-ALIKE STRANGER STOLE YOUR NAME, USURPED YOUR BIOGRAPHY, AND WENT ABOUT THE WORLD PRETENDING TO BE YOU? In Philip Roth's extraordinary new book, he confronts his double, an imposter whose self-appointed task is to lead the Jews out of Israel and back to Europe, a Moses in reverse and a monstrous Nemesis to the 'real' Philip Roth. Suspenseful, hilarious, demonic, pulsing with intelligence and narrative energy, 'Operation Shylock' is at once a spy story, a political thriller, a meditation on identity, and a confession.

Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. 1st Edition. Roth, Philip. Operation Shylock : a confession. First UK edition. London: Jonathan Cape, 1993. Hardback, VG, in unclipped dustjacket with very light shelfwear. Black cloth with gilt lettering to spine. Binding strong. 398pp., contents clean and bright. The novel follows narrator "Philip Roth" on a journey to Israel, where he attends the trial of accused war criminal John Demjanjuk and becomes involved in an intelligence missionthe "Operation Shylock" of the title. Roth's long-time professional acquaintance John Updike gave the novel a famously caustic review in The New Yorker. Updike found the book "an orgy of argumentation . . . this hard-pressed reviewer was reminded not only of Shaw but of Hamlet, which also has too many characters, numerous long speeches, and a vacillating, maddening hero who in the end shows the right stuff." Updike closed with the admonition, "It should be read by anyone who cares about (1) Israel and its repercussions, (2) the development of the postmodern, deconstruction-minded novel, (3) Philip Roth." RightWayUp Books aims to provide accurate and detailed descriptions. All images are of the actual book for sale - no stock images are ever used. Thank you for looking at this listing.
