Biographie de l'auteur
Arthur Ransome was born in Leeds in l884 and went to school at Rugby. He was in Russia in l917, and witnessed the Revolution, which he reported for the Manchester Guardian. After escaping to Scandinavia, he settled in the Lake District with his Russian wife where, in l929, he wrote Swallows and Amazons. And so began a writing career which has produced some of the real children's treasures of all time. In 1936 he won the first ever Carnegie Medal for his book, Pigeon Post.

Some slight edge wear to top and bottom of jacket and spine, some 'scraped' patches to back jacket, top back inside flap slightly 'nibbled', price clipped, gift inscription to second ffep, internally clean tight and square, overall a vg copy for its age. 433pp, illustrated, map endpapers. It all begins when Peter Duck, an elderly sailor once marooned on an island in the Caribbean, tells a tale to the Swallows and Amazons. It's a tale of buried treasure and unfortunately, when the kids set sail to find it, the pirate Jake, captain of the Viper, follows. Across the Atlantic Ocean, through fog, threats from pirate Jake, a hurricane, and an earthquake once they land, the Swallows and Amazons have to find the treasure, evade the pirates, and return safely home to England. Arthur Ransome (1884-1967), spent time in Russia during World War I as a journalist for a radical British newspaper, the Daily News, and also wrote about the literary life of London and about Russia before during and after the revolutions of 1917. His connection with the leaders of the Revolution led to him providing information to the Secret Intelligence Service, while he was also suspected of being a Soviet spy by MI5. He settled with his Russian wife near Coniston in the Lake District, where he wrote his most famous 'Swallows and Amazons' books. Quite a scarce book, even in this later impression.
