Shaw, Irwin. Two Weeks in Another Town. First British Edition. London, Jonathan Cape, 1960. 20.4 cm x 13.8 cm. 413 (4) pages. Original Hardcover with original dustjacket. In protective Mylar. Very good condition with only minor signs of external wear. Minor traces of foxing to endpapers and edges. An American in his early forties finds himself in Rome for a fortnight, on a banal errand. He thinks of himself as sane, health, happy. But a bizarre, small accident starts a train of events which endanger his life, overthrow his conception of himself, test his system of values, attack his reason and his will to live, bring back remembrance of old wounds and sit in judgment on his past. They involve him successively with Americans, Italians, exiles from all parts of Europe, who batter at him, make furious demands on him, threaten him, plead for his help, confess to him, entrap him. A girl falls in love with him, and disappears. An ex-wife, whom he has hated, makes a disturbing appearance; he is the witness to the collapse of a once-famous film director who has been his friend and who forces him to perform a grotesque service for him; a good friend dies and leaves him an uncomfortable legacy; unwittingly he is the cause of despair for a young American boy who shames him and prods his conscience, and with whose chaotic life he becomes hopelessly intertwined. For two weeks he is exposed to the full heat of a tragic, exploding society. The conversation is a roar of talk about love, art, war, politics, death, betrayal, poverty, money. He is haunted by memories of his youth and the night is made hideous for him by fearful dreams. By the time he leaves Rome he has gone through the greatest crisis of his life.
