Richard P. McBrien is Crowley-O'Brien Professor of Theology at the University of Notre Dame. Educated at the Pontifical Gregorian University in Rome, he has also served as president of the Catholic Theological Society of America. A leading authority on Catholicism, he is the bestselling author of Catholicism, Lives of the Popes, and Lives of the Saints, as well as the general editor of The HarperCollins Encyclopedia of Catholicism. Most recently a consultant for ABC News, McBrien offers regular commentary on all the major television networks. He is also a prizewinning syndicated columnist in the Catholic press.

Readers who carefully compare the study edition with the original two-volume work will note some clarifications regarding, for example, theological dissent, the virginal conception of Jesus, Baptism, ordination, the papacy, and some moral issues. The changes do not constitute a full-scale revision, however. Rather, they represent an editing process designed to eliminate, as far as possible, any residual ambiguity about certain matters of doctrine. These textual modifications only reinforce the author's abiding concern to present the material in an even-handed, objective manner, and in a way that does not leave the reader in any doubt about the content of Catholic doctrine. Contrary to the observations of some, this book does not propose a pick-and-choose approach to Catholic doctrine, as if one could arbitrarily decide to follow a particular theological opinion about the divinity of Jesus Christ or homosexuality, for example, even when such an opinion is clearly at odds with the councils of the Church or its ordinary magisterium.
