Hardcover. Etat : Very Good. Etat de la jaquette : Very Good. Text in English. 281 pp. Couple of small tears on dust jacket. Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture explores a religious phenomenon rarely studied from an anthropological point of view. The book lays its emphasis on the cultural aspects of pilgrimage and focuses on the theological doctrines and popular notions which promote Christian pilgrimage, and the symbols and images which embody them. The first chapter begins with an introduction to terms used in comparative symbology (further explicated in an appendix) and places the pilgrimage phenomenon in an anthropological framework. The essays on pilgrimages that follow are illustrated by photos the Turners took during their travels. In a chapter on Mexican pilgrimages to the shrines at Zapopan, Chalma, Ocotlan, and Guadalupe, the authors show how Mexican pilgrimages, as a whole, best represent the phenomenon in its unfragmented state, with full devotional, fiesta, and market systems intact, The Turners note that pilgrimages in Mexico have both Old and New World antecedents, and in certain cases, such as Guadalupe, it is possible to trace historical connections back through Spanish religious culture and beyond, into the far past of Judeo-Christian tradition. The pilgrimage of St. Patrick's Purgatory in Lough Derg, Ireland, dates from the 4th century and has persisted through numerous changes in its original religious context. The authors identify this type of pilgrimage as archaic, a pilgrimage bearing evident traces of earlier religions in the foundation narratives, attendant folk beliefs liturgies, and symbolism. The history, chronology, and ritual involved in this pilgrimage are carefully detailed: the authors point out how the archaic pilgrimage differs from a prototypical pilgrimage, one which is directly connected with the life and teachings of the founder of the faith, his principal disciples, companions, and immediate successors. The authors discuss the roots of Marian pilgrimages-those to the shrines of the Mother of God-and the exigencies of these systems and their central shrine images. The book covers the spread and range of different types of pilgrimages and their meaning within the universal church. Finally, post- industrial pilgrimages are given detailed attention: the authors show the role of the child visionary in a society without faith, as seen in the cases of La Salette and Lourdes Image and Pilgrimage in Christian Culture is a penetrating study offering the reader a modern interpretation of an age-old phenomenon. Lectures on the History of Religions Victor Turner is a noted anthropologist and author of many books in- cluding The Ritual Process (1969), Dramas Fields, and Metaphors (1974), and other works on comparative symbols. He is at present William R. Kenan Jr. Professor of Anthropology at the University of Virginia. Edith Turner, his wife and collaborator, has carried out much library and field research.
